Each year I add another bed and a few more vegetables. I find it relaxing and exciting to get our supper from our backyard. Plus it is more cost efficient for us in the long run due to the prices of organic vegetables in the store. Thanks for the tips!

Also, can I plant more than one type of vegetable in the same box? I have a large patio that will be perfect for a planter box.

I live in Oregon, and there are several good organic, non GMO sources: Territorial Seeds, Nichols Garden Nursery, for starters. You could do a search on Organic seeds for your state or even your surrounding area. I would try to get seeds/plants that are “native” to your area for the best results. (That’s why you should always try local first. Plants that have been grown from the beginning in your area will do much better than plants from hundreds of miles away)

It was helpful to remove some of the leaves from the sunflower stalk to allow light to reach the bean vines. This method saved a lot of room in the garden.

I love Fedco Seeds out of Maine. They are very transparent in the info they provide and have a handy key/info in their catalog that lets you choose your seeds based on where the seed came from, such as produced locally to produced by a company that sells GMO seeds, and the levels in between.

Thank you so much,

Thank you Wellness Mama for everything you do!

You can grow these in a 5 gallon bucket with holes in the bottom for drainage. You will need a trellis for them to climb. Squash, tomatoes, peppers, peas and most things grow well in containers if staked or trellised properly. No need for raised beds even. Salad greens do well in a plastic storage bin that’s 6 – 8″ deep. Make sure it’s good soil, organic, composted. Water and it will grow. 🙂

I want to grow zuccini and yellow swash. I’m in an appartment complex with a yard size of about 6×6. What can I grow organically?

Beginning with starter seeds inside (how-to, what to use, etc) to transferring outside and such? I wasn’t sure how the process goes for planting things ‘under’ others goes-ie, basil under tomato-which do you plant first?

Its layers of organic matter to build instant raised beds, which slowly compost. You can plant straight into it. From your photos it looks like youve done half a no dig bed. It produces the most amazing veggies!

We had a lot of theft from birds, squirrels, and possoms. Tried live traps for the mammals (along with our dogs catching the occasional possom) and netting and fake owls for the birds, but nothing worked. We’re goin to try topsy turvys this year and keep them in our sun room. Hopefully they work. Anyone know if they’re any good?

Starting seeds in the house is so fun for kids to experience too… we just moved and I’m anxious to get planting. The seasonal growing link is a helpful resource, thanks!
