This is the ingredient in Vicks that make it work through the years. They hide that fact now days.I have only used it for adults though. Turpentine is an old remedy from the slave days. Very interesting.

A byproduct of a chemical industry is “natural”? Amusing.

Shea and mango butter might result in too hard of a rub, but you can use any liquid carrier oil instead of coconut oil. Olive and almond are listed as options in the recipe.

Hi,
We keep remaking this recipe because it works! We’ve used during covid, colds, flu. But most seriously, and I’m not giving medical advice here, my oldest son rubs it on my back during bad asthma attacks. Usually does the trick. If it gets real bad, lol or if we remember, he rubs it on my feet also. Honestly, we feel it works better than the store bought.

I do have a question. Can I substitute shea or mango butter for the coconut butter. We have a family member who is deathly allergic to coconut and we try to be a coconut free home. I use both for my body cream and it’s wonderful.

Candelilla wax or carnauba wax are good alternatives to beeswax. They have a higher melting temp and take longer to harden when cooling. Soy is commonly GMO and is often produced with a lot of pesticides.

I’ve never had any issues with these essential oils as long as they are diluted in a carrier oil of some source. But you should always know the properties and side effects of the oils you use. For example you should never use peppermint oil on someone with high blood pressure. There are also oils you shouldn’t use on pregnant people. I personally wouldn’t use Clove because it brings up a trauma response lol. Thank you for sharing though being informed is best. ??

Substitute for beeswax? Wanna make some for my Vegan kiddo (they are an adult). I’m thinking like a soy wax but am unsure

Your recipe sounds good except for two things. Both clove and cinnamon are not good for you. As you know essential oils are very potent and sadly, even though essential oils are natural all essential oils are not good for skin use and both clove and cinnamon oil fall into this category. A lot of these oils smell very good but can be dangerous for adults and even more so for children.

“Highly toxic essential oils include camphor, clove, lavender, eucalyptus, thyme, tea tree, and wintergreen oils, the researchers noted. Many essential oils can cause symptoms such as agitation, hallucinations and seizures. Symptoms may also include chemical burns, breathing problems, liver failure and brain swelling, among others.”

There’s a lot of confusion and controversy about eucalyptus and peppermint for young children. Robert Tisserand (who developed the kid safe line for Plant Therapy) gives safety guidelines for their use in little ones. He recommends peppermint can be used at a .5% dilution ratio for ages 3-6, and eucalyptus globulus or eucalyptus radiata are safe at .5% for children under age 3. CHildren ages 3-6 can safely use up to 1% eucalyptus. In this recipe the peppermint is omitted for young children and the eucalyptus is used at a .12% dilution ratio, well below the safe limit. With essential oils a lot of what’s safe for kids depends on the method of application, the dilution ratio, and the age/weight of the child. https://tisserandinstitute.org/learn-more/kids-inhalation-safety/

In your own article you state you use Plant Therapy because they have marked their oils for what is kid safe. LOOK at the label you recommend for this and you will see both these oils are absolutely not kids safe, especially for babies!

Paper towel as soon as it is cool enough to touch works really well. Hope that helps. I had made homemade deodorant using a similar recipe and found the beeswax and oil combination actually washed out decently well in sufficiently hot water after I had wiped out as much as I could with paper towel.

Wonderful article! I just wanted to ask what your suggested lavender essential oil amount would be if I used it in a baby vapor rub formula with eucalyuptus (those two would likely be the only essential oils I’d use).

Thanks!

I only have solid coconut oil. Can I use it instead of liquid. Actually, the recipe doesn’t say which one to use. Sarah, great substitutes. Congrats.

Just hoping for a bit clarification. Thank you.
