I recently re-read the book Virgin Coconut Oil written by Tropical Traditions founders Brian and Marianita and I’m glad I did. I’m already a huge fan of coconut oil, obviously… (just google “Wellness Mama Coconut Oil” and check out all the results), but this book always makes me want to go drink some coconut oil.

Virgin Coconut Oil Book Review:

I use their coconut oil for everything from cooking to skin lotion to putting in my coffee. I buy it by the five gallon bucket and I’m certainly convinced of its quality, but it was great to read about how their company was formed and all the effort they put into ensuring the most high quality coconut oil available.

Virgin Coconut Oil also cites many studies and scientific information about coconut oil and it’s many benefits:

Coconut oil is nature’s richest source of MCTs (medium chain triglycerides). Not only do MCTs raise the body’s metabolism leading to weight loss, but they have special health giving properties as well. The most predominant MCT in coconut oil, for example, is Lauric acid. Lipid researcher Job Kabara states “Never before in the history of man is it so important to emphasize the value of Lauric Oils. The medium-chain fats in cocnout oil are similar to the fats in mother’s milk and have similar neutraceutical affects. These health effects were recognized centuries ago in Ayurvedic medicine. Modern research has now found a common link between these two natural health produces – their fat or lipid content.” Outside of human mother’s breast milk, coconut oil is nature’s most abundant source of Lauric Acid and medium chain fatty acids.

I’m already a huge fan of saturated fat, but it was great to see the reminder of all the important roles of saturated fat in the diet:

  • “Saturated fatty acids constitute at least 50 percent of cell membranes. They give our cells necessary firmness and integrity.” (as in avoiding wrinkles and getting rid of cellulite!)
  • “They play a vital role in the health of our bones. For example, at least 50 percent of our dietary fats need to be saturated for calcium to be effectively incorporated into the skeletal system.”
  • “They lower Lp(a), a substance in the blood that indicates a proneness to heart disease.”
  • “They protect the liver from the toxic effects of alcohol and certain drugs.”
  • “They enhance the immune system.”
  • “They are needed for the proper utilization of essential fatty acids. Elongated omega-3 fatty acids are better retained in the tissues when the diet is rich in saturated fats.”
  • “Saturated 18-carbon stearic acid and 16-carbon palmitic acid are the preferred foods for the heart, which is why the fat around the heart is highly saturated. The heart draws on this reserve of fat in times of stress.”
  • “short and medium chain saturated fatty acids have important antimicrobial properties.”

Virgin Coconut Oil also details the various ways that coconut oil is supportive:

  • Digestive health
  • Brain Health
  • Weight Loss
  • Thyroid Health
  • Skin health
  • Energy levels

While some would worry about gaining weight from adding saturated fat to their diets, the book reminds: “Scientific studies have reported that the fatty acids from MCTS in coconut oil are not easily converted into stored triglycerides, and that MCTs can not readily be used by the body to make larger fat molecules.”

If you are on the fence about Coconut Oil’s health benefits or if you haven’t already, I’d definitely recommend reading Virgin Coconut Oil.

I have used coconut oil on my hair for years. I have mixed with black castor oil and it has promoted rapid hair growth. Mix 1 oz of black castor oil with 2oz of coconut oil and massage on a damp scalp for 5-7minutes 3x a week and watch the growth .

It can be normal to feel a little strange the first few days, especially if you aren’t used to it… some say that this is in part due to the anti fungal activity it has…

I know coconut oil has been touted, especially in recent years, with many health-promoting properties. It seemed quite amazing when I first started reading about it – all the wonderful benefits of this once demonized food/oil and I was excited to get some. It seems to have become popular from everyone from mercola to WAPF to vegans…”The darling of the natural foods industry” as I have seen it called. But I have had some instinctive concerns about using too much of it, even with of all the internet hype about benefits of late. And wondering if it really has all these benefits that are claimed. A small example, I made some ‘Bullet-Proof’ type coffee for a few days in a row and I didn’t feel that great – just felt a little off. I do understand that saturated fat from quality sources is not bad and is needed in the body, but I feel like it’s important to look thoroughly at things, especially when something becomes touted as a wonder-like food product or ‘new’ idea, like coconut oil, or high amounts of fat in the diet, and people start embracing it without looking thoroughly at it. I want to do more research, but there is some evidence-based info on this site (which appears to be unbiased?) which isn’t all the positivity about coconut oil I’ve seen elsewhere: https://nutritionfacts.org/topics/coconut-oil/

I’ll continue to use some coconut oil, but I’m not going out of my way to make sure I have it daily. I want to learn more about it and look at more research. I could be wrong, but right now I’m just not sure about using it excessively.

It’s funny you should post this article up now. I was just starting to give up on coconut oil and well oils in general, so it was really good to be reminded, that coconut oil is the least thing i should be giving up.
Now not to sound weird, but I want to add something about cellulite. You mentioned it can make it less, or even go away. In 6 months since I’ve been low-carb paleo I did not lose much weight. Sometimes it even went up a bit. I do want to add I am overweight, so technically i should lose some. But in these 6 months i have been using coconut oil every day (just internal, im too lazy to use it as lotion) and after reading your article, i looked down at my legs where the cellulite was really obvious when i started LCP and…i had to really squeeze hard to see it. I can’t believe it is almost gone!!…I used to think there was no way i could ever get rid of it… and now it’s almost gone… This is sincerely one of the happiest news (something i did not even realize until now) for a really long time!!
So thank you and thank coconut too!! :D:D

I too have read the book and have been using the Gold Label for about a year and absolutely love it.  I use it as a skin moisturizer and cook with it whenever I can.  I swish with it after brushing my teeth too.  I also buy the coconut chips and eat them almost everyday with some seeds and chopped dark chocolate.  I believe it has helped decrease the occurrence in cold sores I’ve gotten.  I used to get them after any viral infection and I haven’t had any for over a year.  I believe it has anti fungal properties and has helped me with that too.  I can not sing the praises loud enough!
Love your blog and all that you do for your followers!

Hello there I am very glad you read it. I am a coconut islander. Yes i am from sri lanka and we use at least 1 coconut per day. Coconut for curries, sweets, cakes, crepes what not all.

Some one had trouble getting out the meat of coconuts so I wrote an article on easy way to remove the meat from a coconut.

My granny used to make coconut oil but now times have changed.
    Hoping to read the book.

I have tried the gold label and did not care for the taste.  What are your thoughts on the expeller pressed CO?  Just wondering you have tried the Gold Label and what are your thoughts?  I did just order the soy free eggs by Tropical Traditions because of the free shipping promotion and they arrived unbroken and are great.

I personally love Tropical Traditions gold label, but it does have a stronger taste. The expeller pressed isn’t as good but will still have most of the benefits. I love their eggs too!

I am a newer coconut oil user. Mixed with baking soda, I have stopped using commercial face wash and then dab on some fresh coconut oil for moisturizer/makeup remover/eye cream…talk about cost-cutting! My favorite treat that I make with coconut oil is fresh popped popcorn. The coconut oil adds a unique and delicious flavor – much lighter, healthier and interesting than regular butter. Thank you for the post!

I’ve used coconut oil for many years now. I use it in cooking mainly, but have done a few topical applications too. I love that it has anti microbial properties. I think that may be one of the factors as to why we stay healthy as a family. I’m enjoying reading your blog and may try to start implementing some lifestyle changes because of it. Thanks!
